From corporate governance to rehashing usenet - follow friday for 9th April 2010
I've been more active on Twitter of late (twitter.com/rossahall if you're interested!). Having settled into my new role I've found a few things to comment on, and engage in some interesting conversations. Yes, there's the #FF - follow friday - tag, but sometimes it makes more sense to add some context as to why you're following people.
DougYPark raised some interesting observations on Corporate Governance in the USA. In particular he asked whether boards should have a focus on strategic risk. I asked whether there was something in there for UK boards to consider as well.
The corporate governance discussion carried on with dougchia and a question about risk in banking. I take the view banks need to take risks to be successful, and I'll raise concerns that current focus on banking practice risks throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
Whether it was right to promote women to the boardroom as a knee-jerk reaction to the financial crisis kicked started Fay Feeney and I to engage in a brief chat. My fear is we might see a rash of women being promoted as window dressing, leading to their failure, followed by a "told you so" from the old guard and return to "business as usual." Golden rule - if you're promoting people make sure they're competent and supported, regardless of age, gender, race, or anything else.
Whether to block or not on Twitter was a blog post from markwschaefer that got me thinking. I hadn't considered the impact that allowing a spammer might have on fellow followers. Since reading it I've blocked a couple of "people" who seem to think posting ads every 30 seconds is what I want to read.
StrangeLoops, PriteshPatel and I have had a few late night discussions of late. We've talked about tracking clicks above and blow the lines, analytics and a bit of fun about my age! Oh, and we also realised a lot of this "Social Media" talk is a rehash of discussions had about Usenet, AOL, discussion forums and everything else.
On the fun side I'm glad I made Glenn laugh with a few "Goodness Gracious Me" finds on YouTube. Cheered me up as well!
