Facebook is the #1 source for traffic
There has been a fair bit of excitement in recent days about Facebook becoming more important as a source of traffic than Google. Research from Compete suggests about 13% of traffic floating around comes from the social media site, with eBay and Google accounting for about half of that. Even MySpace, much maligned and ailing fast, clocks up a respectable 2%.
What does this tell us?
To be honest I don't think this is a huge surprise. People have been sharing links for quite some time, pushing them into forums or spreading them around by eMail. What's different now is more people are congregating in one place - FaceBook - and so it can be tracked more easily.
What also isn't clear is whether this Facebook generated traffic is better quality than that coming from Google et al. My suspicion is it is probably less sticky, more about people firing things that people may find interesting into the ether rather than people who are actively searching picking it out.
I think the jury is out, but we should still be monitoring.
