My life and the iPod Touch - it goes beyond keeping a diary

Now the iPad is out in the open I've been looking at how I use my iPod Touch. I decided to get one of these things about 18 months ago to use as a PDA. I wanted something that had a clear display, I could type my notes and blog posts on and keep my diary on. It sat in my shirt pocket, getting pulled out in meetings when I needed it, or during a quiet moment when inspiration took me. I'd tap a few notes, then put it away.

Simple.

Quickly the capabilities of this device dawned on me. I was typing full blown articles on the small keypad, resting it comfortably between the palms of my hands. With WiFi on I was accessing my eMail, surfing, eventually Tweeting and accessing Facebook through dedicated apps. I changed the way I managed my to-do lists to cater for the lack of integration with iCal (please fix that one, Apple!) Regularly I'm accessing my mindmaps or sketching lighting diagrams from my photography, or even learning chords.

This small device has become embedded into my life. I wander round with it, always ready to pull it out and do something. And I'm using it in ways that I didn't anticipate when I bought what I saw as a souped up way of keeping my diary and listening to music.

Which brings me to the iPad. Apple has suggested ways this much larger device could be used. It could be an eBook reader, or a more convenient ways to access eMail or the web. Some pundits have started to talk about business applications for it.

This is what excites me about it. It isn't what it does now, it is what people will find to do with it. I'm convinced that when it gets out there this is going to kick-start a new relationship with some of our technologies, one where the technology is less intrusive, less hell bent on showing us how clever the designers can be.
