Have we forgotten what Facebook is for?

A fascinating tweet appeared from Stella Riggs. In 140 characters she stated:

i think somewhere along the lines of its existence, Facebook got taken waaaaaay out of context. I'm not here for your fanclub, or business

Clearly it is impossible to understand what she meant in such few characters, but it got me thinking. All this talk I've become immersed in of late about business and marketing and building followings and networks, I've lost the point of Facebook somewhere along the lines.

It's a social network, a place for friends to meet and talk and do the sort of things that might be done down the pub. If we're going to convince people to stop doing that for a while and perhaps allow us into their personal space then we've got to be sensitive to this. We can't be as aggressive and "gung-ho" as we might be in other marketing spaces.

So recite after me....
