Intrusive advertising makes an unwelcome return

Intrusive advertising is back with a vengeance. After browser makers thoughtfully inserted "pop up blockers" to stop the annoying pop-ups and pop-unders that invaded our vision, now we have new versions coming through the delights of CSS.

If you know what you're doing you can create a pop-up ad that - it appears - cannot be blocked. Instead it just sits on top of the content you are trying to read, getting in the way, until you click on the link or close the thing down. Bad enough that these ads can sit at the top or bottom of the screen, always present and reducing the reading area, now they're appearing in the middle of the screen, making them impossible to ignore. And worse still, some people have been getting really clever and made it very difficult to get rid of them. Like on Wired last night where an intrusive ad ran across the screen, making it very difficult to hit the "close" option.

So yet again we have the worst form of advertising - forcing the majority of people to see something they have no desire to and interact with it to get to what they want.

I wonder how long it will be before the browser makers counter this annoyance?
