Improving your productivity on the iPod Touch or iPhone
After I wrote about how my iPod Touch had become an essential part of my life I received a couple of eMails from other iPod and iPhone users. They were asking for tips on how I use mine to improve my productivity and details of the apps I was using to achieve this.
Rather than reply to each individually (and leave it at that) I thought I'd share with you the apps that I am currently using. If you don't know what an app is - it's a small piece of software that does something on your iPod. I'll also add a piece here in the next week about how I use the Calendar to manage my to-do list.
I'm going to start off with the free apps. As you can probably tell you don't have to pay for these - but they do make a difference. If you like the sound of one of these apps, just click on the link and you'll be taken to the Apple Store in iTunes.
 | Facebook / MySpace / LinkedIn.
It goes without saying that these apps sit on my iPod Touch and keep me in touch with my friends and contacts. Although the interfaces are not as fully featured as the web versions, I find both the Myspace and Facebook apps a lot easier to use than the web, although the LinkedIn one has a way to go yet. | | Echofon for Twitter.
If I am away from my laptop and have a few minutes to kill I'll use this app to Tweet. Again it lacks the full functionality of something like Tweetdeck, but the convenience is what does it for me. | | Freemind Lite.
I mindmap like crazy, and since I found Freemind it's been a lot easier for me to do it. But what if I need my latest mindmap for a meeting? This Lite version lets me see mindmaps I've created in the full feature version on my laptop. | | Sketchbook Mobile X.
As well as mindmapping I also sketch (sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words!) This is a very simple app that lets me draw brief pictures freehand. I can then sync them to iPhoto and take it from there. | | Strobox.
When I do my photography I'll sometimes like a particular way I've set the lights up, or I'll want to recreate an effect. This app lets me create and recall lighting diagrams - it is as simple as that. And when I'm happy with what I've done I can save the diagram as a JPG so I can get at it in iPhoto. | | TV Guide. (UK)
As far as productivity goes this is a surprising hit. If I want to know what's on could hunt down the listings magazine (which is usually missing) or I could fire this app up and take a quick look online. |
