Is poor vehicle maintenance increasing?
It may just be me, but I have noticed of late an increase in amount of poor vehicle maintenance on the roads. Missing brake lights are the most common, in the past two days I have followed three cars without any working lights and gave up counting the ones that had just a single one working. I've also seen tyres so bald they were almost slick, bumpers hanging off and other signs of people not keeping their cars safe.
This could be a consequence of the economic downturn. Poor families made poorer by circumstance are struggling to keep the car on the road is the most likely argument that will be put forward for this decline. Which raises an interesting question. If this is the case, are poorer families more likely to have car accidents?
Another interesting question arises. Speeding receives a massive amount of funding for prevention (speed cameras and traffic calming) and has had high profile advertising campaigns played over and over again on primetime TV. Mobile phone use has also received high profile attention, and then there's the annual "don't drink and drive" campaign over Christmas. So where are the "maintain your car" adverts? Something so easy to fix and yet ignored so completely.
A cynic might suggest that's because it is a lot easier to generate some cash through the fines courts can levy. It is also highly visible, giving the authorities the impression they're dealing with crime, regardless of the actual impact it might have on people's lives.
Personally I'm just hoping no one's noticed yet.
