My battle with Microsoft Excel
A bit of a battle has ensued over the past couple of days. During the first quarter of the year I built some reports in Apple Numbers that were deliberately designed to be dramatic and clear. What I forgot was Apple's desire to produce easy to use applications with an emphasis on strong imagery would not be replicated in Microsoft's Excel product. The battle that I've joined is a simple one of converting one to another.
The structure of the reports remains the same, and the way the data is presented is still the same. But there's something disappointing about how they appears on screen and page. They aren't as polished as the Mac versions: the pie charts aren't as crisp, the text isn't as clear, the layout a little more clumsy.
I'm sure this is little more than me being fussy given my artistic leanings, nevertheless it is disappointing. I'd designed clear reports to be used by management to illustrate key performance indicators. Unfortunately the translation to Excel has taken the edge.
