When role models become peers
Alex J. Mann has an interesting observation on growing up. There comes a point when those people you saw as role models suddenly become your peers. You grow as a person to a point where you outstrip those you once looked up to.
To my mind this is such a helpful state of affairs. We should hold our role models in awe to some extent, and look up to them as inspiration for what they have achieved. But if we're to move on as a society we must exceed their achievements and look not to emulate what makes them our role models, but to improve upon it. Only that way can we achieve even greater things.
